The Everglades is the largest remaining natural subtropical wilderness in North America. The vast variety of animals and vegetation consider the Everglades a safe haven from the ever encroaching human habitats. Alligators, Anhingas, and even the elusive Florida panther make their home just 45 minutes west of downtown Miami. It is hard to imagine that this is what all of South and Central Florida used to look like only 150 years ago. The only way to to see the "river of grass" is by Airboat, since normal boats could never make it though only three feet of water, which is the average water depth of the Everglades.
