Frequently Asked Questions
What should we wear or bring? -- Brimmed hats, ball caps or sun visors and footwear that you do not mind getting wet. Sneakers, sandals, or surf shoes are appropriate. If the weather will be cooler in the morning, then dress in layers of quick drying fabrics, since it can warm up rapidly during the day. If it will be cold and windy, gloves and a windbreaker are a good idea (No Blue Jeans or Sweat Shirts). You may want to bring sunglasses with a strap, sunscreen, bug repellent, waterproof or disposable camera in a zip lock bag. Although bottled water is provided, you may prefer something else or just want to have extra on hand. Be sure to bring any personal emergency medications, e.g. for allergies, that you may require. Leave valuables that you do not want to risk dropping into the water locked up in your car or at home.
What's the rain and bad weather policy? -- Kayak tours do NOT go out in the rain. Your outfitter will pay close attention to the doppler radar on a daily basis and living in Fort Lauderdale has taught them that the weather can change at any minute - so they’ll make the the decision to launch or not on the day of your scheduled tour. If the decision is to cancel, you'll have the option to re-schedule or receive a full refund.
Is kayaking easy? -- With a little instruction, kayaking is incredibly easy for a relatively fit or active person. Kayaks are relatively fast and stable when compared to canoes.
Is kayaking safe? -- Absolutely! And, the safest kayaks available are used for the kinds of paddling you'll do in the New River.
Can kids go kayaking? What are the age limits? -- Yes! Tandem kayaks are available so kids age 6 or older can go paddling as long as they are in a boat with a parent or guardian. Make sure you specify the ages of any youthful paddlers so your outfitter can be sure to have the appropriate safety gear. If you have a small child with his/her own PFD (Personal Flotation Device), please note that for the outfitter when you place your order. Depending on boat traffic and wind, paddlers as young as 13 years old may be allowed to paddle their own kayak.
